In this study, a survey of public library librarians was conducted to examine the current librarian’s job status by conducting a survey on the library’s environment, such as the size of books, number of employees, and operating subjects. As a result of the study, it was found that based on the current job content and recognition, librarians are mainly working in the order of operating reading culture programs, planning reading culture programs, and user information services. In addition, it can be seen that librarians highly value the importance of their respective duties, and in the case of labor intensity, more than half of them recognize that the current labor intensity is high. Among the detailed competency units corresponding to each task in the future, more appropriate competency unit elements should be considered in consideration of the essential competency, additional supplementation, and lower factors through this study. In addition, the higher the number and experience of regular workers in the library, the higher the degree of librarian certification, and the higher the current position, the higher the importance, difficulty, and expertise of the current work, so it is expected that the library should continue to build experience in the future.
This study is to suggest the direction of the spatial change of the university library based on the trend of the spatial change in the university libraries and a survey on the perception of the librarians. For this purpose, the characteristics of the spatial change of the university libraries from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed, and the problems of the spatial change of the university libraries were identified through a survey. As a result of the survey, there was a total of 99 spatial changes in the university libraries nationwide over the past 20 years, including new construction, extension and remodeling. In recent years, it was found that due to the university’s budget tightening policy, the university libraries focus on remodeling rather than new construction or extension. The characteristics of the spatial change were analyzed as follows. First, the resting areas have been expanded in the libraries. Second, The libraries are in pursuit of pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. Third, the libraries aim to establish an innovative and creative space. All these changes have been made in order to accommodate the requests of users and increase the number of users. It was also found that spatial change has advantages in these two points: providing various spaces and increasing the number of library visitors. On the other hand, spatial change has the problems such as the increased cost of maintaining the facility and the lack of management manpower. Additionally, a few more problems of spatial change are pointed out: first, spatial change only reflects the trend of the times without making a big change in the services and the actual value of the university library. Second, it has made university libraries standardized losing each library’s own characteristics. This study suggests that the spatial change of the university library should secure the distinctiveness of the university library, accommodate various changes, and aim for the symbolism that can prove the value and existence of the university library.
The 3rd Library Development Plan raises the need to secure space through the establishment of a regional repository library as the issue of holding books is highlighted as a common problem in public libraries. The Korean Library Law Act also impose the responsibility of integrated management of local library materials on the regional representative library. Accordingly, this study aimed at Busan Metropolitan Library, which is operating a collaborative repository in earnest among regional representative libraries, and investigated the operation status of the collaborative repository and the perception of public librarians about the collaborative repository. The data necessary for the study were obtained through surveys, interviews, field surveys, and internal data analysis. Through this, the purpose of this study was to provide basic data that will help the Busan Metropolitan Library to operate the collaborative repository efficiently in the future, and at the same time, to present basic data that can be used as a reference for the operation of the collaborative repository of the representative libraries of other regions.
In this study, the current status of the public library steering committee, which is operated in accordance with Article 30 Paragraphs 2 and 3 of the Libraries Act, was examined and understood through a survey, and the direction of the promotion and policy for revitalizing the steering committee was sought moving forward. As a result of the analysis performed, the number of operations is once or twice a year, and the decisions of the steering committee meetings are reported to their supervisors, yet the reporting and disclosure of the meeting minutes are not mandatory in terms of regulations, etc., and while the importance was recognized, it turned out that the operation was carried out formally due to the lack of personnel in charge. The primary factors for revitalizing the operation were investigated as the structure of the committee, the responsibilities and authority of the committee, and the assignment of dedicated staff, etc. While there was a high perception that the enactment of a standard ordinance (proposal) was necessary, the concerns about the inhibition of autonomy were also mentioned, and hence, it is necessary to enact a standard ordinance(proposal) that sufficiently guarantees autonomy. To revitalize the steering committee, it is necessary to find various utilization and operational plans by considering holding regular meetings, supplementing systems and regulations that can reflect meeting decisions, establishing subcommittees, and assigning dedicated staff.
The purpose of this study is to suggest for utilization of supporters to promote public libraries. To achieve the study purpose, in-depth interview with nine public library supporters of two public libraries was conducted. The data were analyzed using a qualitative method. The order in which the data analyzed is as follows: segmenting, first coding, in-depth coding, and theme discovery. According to the study results, the followings were suggested for the operation of public library supporters: 1) needed to assign roles based on supporters’ capabilities and personal characteristic, 2) needed proactive role by the librarian in charge, 3) needed proactive role by the public library, 4) needed adequate rewards, 5) needed prior education about the public library.
This study focuses on the management of the news production system in broadcasting companies. This paper concentrates on the process of data registration and metadata management in order to examine whether the currently produced news can have value as a ‘public record’ in the long term, and whether reliable and accurate information is preserved. In addition, the user experience in the current system is analyzed through in-depth interviews with Ingest Managers, Editors, and Archive Managers, who are closely related to metadata creation compared to other members of the its News Department. Finally, a sustainable metadata quality management method is sought to increase the value of news footage as a ‘public record’. In this study, these points can be found out: the metadata of the news agency footage is input manually according to the user’s will or working style, that is, the user-friendly metadata input system is insufficient. Accordingly, it can be seen that the quality of the metadata of the news video continues to deteriorate. As an alternative to overcome this, it is found that work flow improvement, system improvement, classification system and metadata improvement plan, etc. are definitely necessary in the short and long term.
This study explores children’s images in The Children’s News, a children’s newspaper during the Liberation period. For this purpose, frequency analysis, topic modeling, and time series analysis were performed from the first issue of December 1, 1945 to the 86 issue of December 13, 1947, except for No. 34, which was not passed down. As a result of frequency analysis, keywords related to country, school, and family appeared frequently, and through topic modeling, children’s images were observed in these topics, including children with patriotism, children with scientific literacy, children with artistic refinement, and children as social beings. The time series analysis results show that the percentage of patriotism-related topics was high during the early days of the Liberation period when The Children’s News were published, but as the ratio of topics such as science and art gradually increased, it was confirmed that the image of children was diversified.
This study purposed to measure the economic value of repository services of the National Open Access Platform (AccessON), namely Self Archiving and Journal Repository. The value of Self Archiving was measured by applying time-saving value and the value of Journal Repositories by applying market analogy. Based on existing statistics, in-depth interviews with service beneficiaries and stakeholders, and a survey administered to 1,313 researchers, the value of Self Archiving was estimated to be 145 million won and an additional 12 million won with the OA legalization. The value of Journal Repositories was estimated to be 31.2 billion won. The total value of the repository services was 31.35 billion won over the 8-year business period. This result presented an estimated economic value of a national OA repository from the key beneficiaries’ perspectives.
Such future-oriented institutions that put together the functions of a library, archive, and museum are being actively introduced overseas recently and are called LAM, GLAM, and media tech. In South Korea, the term larchiveum, combining library, archive, and museum, is widely used. Therefore, this study explores a case study followed to determine larchiveums in service both home and abroad. The researcher then conducted an interview with librarians, archivists, and curators working for the larchiveums selected as the South Korean cases for the study to understand the meaning of a larchiveum. Additional interviews were conducted with five users that visited a larchiveum in the nation and uploaded posts on a social media platform to understand their perceptions of a larchiveum and problems with the purpose, functions, and services of it. Based on the analysis results, the study proposes vitalization plans for the management of a larchiveum in three aspects: improving the internal and external awareness, securing budgets and manpower for space enhancement and service, and reinforcing the integrated management of a larchiveum via a devoted organization.
The purpose of this study is to examine the status of RDA adoption in Korea and the perception of university librarians on RDA adoption. For this purpose, the adoption status of two libraries that adopted RDA among domestic libraries was analyzed. In addition, interviews were conducted with eight university librarians, and narrative responses related to the adoption of RDA were collected and analyzed. As a result of the interview survey, the research participants recognized that the concept of RDA is very difficult and abstract, there are few implementation cases where RDA is applied, and that it would be very difficult to adopt RDA due to the personnel and budget conditions of the local library. The RDA adoption method recognized by the research participants is to improve RDA awareness, conduct RDA education, prepare guidelines for constructing hybrid bibliographic records when RDA is adopted, operate an RDA pilot institution, and establish a performance model. In addition, research participants need coordination with companies for implementation, prefer to change a specific point in time rather than batch retroactive conversion, discover success stories, establish RDA-related online channels, build and utilize national authority DB, and use the national budget and system support. In this study, based on the research results, a plan to adopt RDA for university libraries in Korea was presented.
A webzine issued by a public institution not only plays a role in communication between members of the institution and its users, but is itself a meaningful record. In addition, as one of the management techniques of the archives, there is a growing awareness that active marketing is needed to promote the service and allow potential users to visit the archives. Therefore, efforts should be made to increase user satisfaction by identifying user needs, composing content reflecting them, and selecting user-centered interfaces appropriately. The purpose of this study is to design ‘On-Gi’, a newsletter of the Presidential Archives, as a user-participating smart platform in a smart device environment. As a research method, we first looked at the current status of webzine publication by relevant domestic institutions. Next, we compared and analyzed the issue of ‘On-Gi’ provided by the Presidential Archives and major contents. Based on this, a design model of the webzine for the marketing of the Presidential Archives was proposed. This can be used as a key marketing strategy for the Presidential Archives in the new user environment of technological innovation of smart devices.
This study analyzed the operation status of the military library and e-book service in order to improve the soldiers’ access to the reading environment and to suggest a plan to revitalize the military library. As a result of the survey, it was found that it is necessary to improve the environment such as the IT environment, devices, and time allowed for access to activate the use of e-books. According to the interview results, problems such as low usage rate and awareness of the digital library, the use of different e-book viewers and management systems for each distributor when distributing e-books, and the dissemination of e-books for the management and accessibility of the Armed Services Editions in library were raised. In order to activate the e-book service of the library in the military, diversify e-book service promotion and education programs, activations such as establish standards for the e-book operating system for each county, use platforms and devices to promote e-book operation and use, and construction of e-book service using Armed Services Editions were derived.
The purpose of this study was to measure the professional identity level of public librarians and to identify related factors. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted for librarians in public libraries in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from October 28 to November 18, 2021 and 375 valid responses collected were analyzed. As a result of the study, among the factors of professional identity public librarians showed high level of professional identity in order of belief in self-regulation, sense of calling to the field, belief in public service, using the professional organization as a major referent, and autonomy. In addition, librarian’s age, career, position and whether the director of the library was a librarian had a statistically significant difference in professional identity. This study has a significance in that the Hall Professionalism Inventory was used to measure participants’ professional identity and it associates domestic public libraries’ settings with professional identity.
Most public library websites provide unstructured cultural program data, which cannot be produced and utilized systematically as bibliographic information. It is not sufficiently used in existing library big data research or cases, and there is a risk of disappearing when the website is reorganized or the person in charge is changed. This study developed a data schema that can be used in conjunction with bibliographic data by collecting and analyzing cultural programs and community service data produced in an unstructured manner and proposed to share and utilize public library cultural programs and community service data, and establish a library big data platform that can serve as an information channel between librarians who are cultural program planners. Library program data posted on the library website can be integrated and managed through the platform, securing continuity of work, and systematically managing and preserving the specialized service history of individual libraries.
Library and Information Science, traditionally a strong field of book and reading, can be said to play a leading and central role in bibliotherapy that heals human emotions, situations, and pathological symptoms through books and reading processes. Therefore, in this study, the perception and status of bibliotherapy were investigated by applying an academic and practical perspective to the field of library and Information Science, which has a very close relationship with bibliotherapy. First, the perception survey surveyed 200 students taking LIS - related classes at four-year universities in the Seoul metropolitan area on five topics (books, bibliotherapy, curriculum, libraries, and others) using keywords related to bibliotherapy. And then, the current status of bibliotherapy in the field of LIS was investigated by dividing it into a curriculum related to bibliotherapy and bibliotherapy activities in the library to examine it from an educational and practical perspective. Bibliotherapy related curriculum status survey explored and analyzed through bibliotherapy related keywords based on 32 universities with LIS departments among four-year universities in Korea. And bibliotherapy programs and reading lists were analyzed for 1,104 public libraries in Korea. Finally, based on the results of these surveys, the direction for the activation and development of bibliotherapy in the field of LIS was presented from the perspective of bibliotherapy participants and operators.
The purpose of this study was to identify the status of adolescents’ user satisfaction with the 22 libraries of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and to improve the quality of information services for adolescents by improving the factors of dissatisfaction, and ultimately, to activate the use of young adults in the libraries of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. In addition, in the transition to the digital age, it was attempted to investigate the use of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Digital Library in the context of the inevitable change of reading media. Through this, this study suggested planning a reading program that could arouse adolescents’ interest and reflect new information technologies, improving the scope and system of e-book services, linking with school libraries, and restructuring library’ space.
