Abstract

The aim of this study is to propose a development plan of public library OPAC interface. For this purpose, the study analyzed cases of OPAC interface of domestic and overseas public libraries, and took a questionnaire survey on use types, level of functional demand and improvement matters of OPAC in order to examine the user requirements on OPAC interface. Public library OPAC interface must comply with interface design principle and reflect requirements of users. Accordingly, it must supply foundation to realize various OPAC functions by inputting perfect bibliographic records on resources. The research result could be used as basic resources for the public library OPAC interface design.

Abstract

For the purpose of improving the Korean Decimal Classification (KDC) in the design field, this study investigated the classification systems of design research suggested in previous studies and compared KDC, DDC, LCC, and NDC. The problems identified from the current KDC include lack of subdivisions regarding basic design theories and major design application fields and the absence of notes for explaining the scope of each design field. To solve these problems, this study suggested improvements for design theories, graphic design, industrial design, and environmental design.

Abstract

This study examined Records Management(RM) practice of public enterprises supervised by National Archives of Korea(NAK). These enterprises are included among public institutions mandated to perform RM according to Public Records Management Act of 2006. The study performed telephone interviews of 8 records managers employed in public enterprises and investigated current status of RM practices, perception of the practices and records managers within the enterprises and treatment to them, as well as opinions of the NAK's assessment of RM in public institutions, While non-electronic records were managed in an appropriate manner, electronic records needed to be transferred, disposed of, and preserved properly. The majority of interviewees expressed positive opinions on the contribution of RM to effectiveness and transparency of the enterprises. However, RM was perceived as irksome work conducted by those in a low position. More interviewees were permanent contract workers or contract personnel than regular employees. They felt a sense of deprivation due to the discrepancy of annual incomes among public enterprises and the differences in treatment and attitude toward between contract workers and regular workers. Interviewees suggested that NAK's assessment of RM was useful since it provided a basis for RM in their institutions. Yet, they pointed out that its measurements were lack of consistency and relevance to public enterprises because those focused on RM in governmental organizations. They also noted that RM practices that the assessment do not cover might be ignored.

Abstract

This study aimed to propose the approach to identify and solve the problems by analyzing the present occupation index of librarians and the future occupation index of librarians after 10 years through the comparison with other jobs. In accordance with the investigation on the LIS students and librarians, the present wage level and the estimated wage level after 10 years were lower than that for other jobs and the employment demand was also lower. Both the students(58.4%) and the librarians(64.2%) considered that the number of full-time employment and the turnover were lower than other jobs. As a result of the analysis, first, this paper proposed to change part-time workers into full-time workers for improving the low wage issue of librarians. Second, '1 public library per 50,000 citizen' was suggested to increase the employment of librarians. Finally, it is proposed to cancel the project to contract out the operation of public libraries and BTL implementation.

This study investigated and analyzed the status of difficult patrons, and examined the most effective response measures targeted the public libraries in Busan. A survey on 128 people who served to the public libraries in Busan carried out for analysis of problem behaviors of public library users, and brainstorming and AHP method by 9 librarians for seeking of the effective response plan. This study shows that the most effective response ways for difficult patrons is to enact detailed regulations and the appropriate notification and education to the users about the regulations. In addition, education for communication skills to library staffs should be conducted on a regular basis, like as using positive language, listening techniques, the appropriate response techniques with angry users.

Abstract

With increasing interest in content marketing, SNS (social networking services) has become more popular as a method of library marketing, both at home and abroad. Accordingly, this study analyzed the operational status and problems of library SNS marketing, in an attempt to find ways to optimize its use. Results show that librarians' opinions of library marketing and library SNS marketing were very high, but the problems they faced included a lack of human resources dedicated to marketing, lack of marketing education, a lack of content to upload each week, and low numbers of contacts on social networking sites. To further develop and optimize library SNS marketing, five solutions were suggested based on the survey results: first, composing an intensive managing team for effective SNS operation; second, providing different levels of marketing training to decrease the librarians' mistakes; third, updating data continuously; fourth, providing information and services users need; and lastly, clearly identifying each channel's active operation goals.

Abstract

This study takes aim at finding how effective the usage of 'Read to Dogs' is for self-respect and reading improvement of elementary school students. For this, this study was compared and analyzed with pretest and posttest using 'tree pictures' of HTP and 'family pictures with motion' of KFD through performing, surveying, and art-therapy treatments. The result of this study showed that reading program using a reading -assistance- dog has a good effect on self-respect of children with reading inactivity. Also, this result will be used as useful information in developing and operating programs for children with reading inactivity in libraries and schools.

Abstract

In this paper, the 'facility' and its related concepts were analysed, and then ontological conceptual definition for the facility was conducted based on a variety of relationships between those concepts. First, as a facility conception relation, inclusion relation, instance relation, rule relation, attribute relation and part-whole relationships were investigated. Second, facility concepts were prescribed as a physical entity in which many parts were functionally integrated. Third, by strictly separating the basic concept and role concept, reading facility, exhibit facility, etc. were not supposed to make multiple inheritances by putting subordinate concepts as those of role concepts, not those of the concept of facility. Fourth and lastly, an ontology for the facility was made by using OWL DL.

Abstract

As the information needs in civil society is getting diverse, the interest in local policy process based on the characteristics of local communities, especially in local policy implementation is growing. However, research in library and information policy has focused rather on policy alternatives than policy process in Korea. In this study, we analyze the policy implementation in "the First Library in my Life" policy in Kyeonggi province with the framework of the Street-Level Bureaucracy Model by Michael Lipsky. In the analysis, we attempt to identify factors in the policy implementation, to examine the usefulness of the model into the situation of Korean library policy, and to suggest major considerations in the policy implementation in Korean public libraries for successful policy implementation. From the results, the usefulness of the model is examined and the need of considering indirect socio-economic factors is suggested.
