The aim of this study is 1) to analyse the historical development and current condition of the subject based classification(SBC), 2) to clarify the function and to categorize the specific kind of SBC, for its conceptualization and the development plan. For this purpose, almost 30 cases, for the period 1937 through now, were analyzed concerning their terms used in the names and the specific kinds as SBC. In addition, the analysis was made regarding how the SBC fulfill the selected main functions as a classificatory scheme and how SBC is inter-related with the other knowledge organization systems(KOS) such as classification and subject heading. Based on the above analysis, the conclusion addressed that SBC could be defined in consideration of the detailed function, type, information environment, and interconnection among the KOS, and suggested the future development plan of SBC as a classification scheme.
This study analyzed the current condition of authority control, introduced the MADS(Metadata Authority Description Schema) for authority data. MADS supports encoding an authority description for a agent(person, organization), event, term(topic, temporal entity, genre, geographic entity, hierarchical geographic entity, occupation) and defines main elements, subelements, and attributes using the XML schema language. Lastly, using the MADS's characteristics, this study proposed the effective use plans of interoperability of authority data.
This paper examined the roles of academic libraries in open access journal publishing in terms of monetary supports for publication. As a result, many academic libraries have participated in the cooperative programs such as COPE(Compact for Open-Access Publishing Equity) and <TEX>$SCOAP^3$</TEX>(The Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) for authors to publish their research in open access journals. Also, 13 academic libraries in North America have set up the campus-based open access author funds individually. Most of academic libraries in participating COPE did not fund for research that have been published in the hybrid open access journals. In addition to publication funds, academic libraries provided authors or scholarly societies with such services as copyright negotiation, technological supports of the publication process, and the dissemination of open access publications.
As the smartphone market has expanded and university students in their twenties account for the largest portion of the market, university libraries need to provide mobile library services to keep up with students' growing demand in mobile services. The purpose of this study is to analyze the status and trends of mobile services in Korean university libraries. This study investigated mobile services of 434 university libraries in Korea and 114 ones which are members of ARL during the months of September and November in 2012. As a result, this study found that university libraries in Korea were offering 55 mobile Web and 29 mobile application services with 11.2 and 10.7 contents respectively. In addition, on the basis of the identified current problems, this study suggested further steps for developing and improving mobile services in Korean university libraries.
The purpose of this study is to find any contradictions which arise with the use of Wiki in the classroom, and to address such contradictions in order to promote learning among LIS students. This study employed a multi-methodology, including Wiki usage analysis, and interviews with 12 students who participated in an LIS class. Observations revealed that group projects are common in academic classes. Interviewees agreed that their performance through collaborative efforts was higher than that through individually performed activities. However, there were no pre-experiences with Wiki in learning and task-oriented cooperation which gave rise to a controversy. In addition, even though a new technology, as a more advanced form, was suggested, students cooperated with their peers according to their tradition without using the recommended new technology. Therefore, students should be taught about Wiki usage and experience the effective learning which is available to them through collaboration with their peers. Additionally, LIS curriculum should incorporate relationship-oriented activities using Web 2.0 applications with the expectation of enhanced learning among students.
The purpose of this study is to propose an approach to acquire research records effectively in context of government-funded research institutes via case studies and a questionnaire survey. For the case studies, a report from Joint Information Systems Committee JISC in UK, the University of Melbourne policy on the management of research data and records, a report from Canadian Association of Research Libraries(CARL) are analyzed. In addition, a survey questionnaire is conducted for forty nine government-funded research institutes and forty three responses out of 49 institutes are collected and analyzed. Based on the analyses on case studies and responses of the survey, an approach for research records management with four aspects is proposed: regulatory policy, best practices and manuals, professionals for research records, and outreach programs of individual reseach institutes for acquiring appropriate research records.
This paper aims to analyze the employment of graduates majoring in Library and Information Science(LIS) in K University, to identify problems in the employment of those graduates, and to propose approaches to improve employment. Among 178 graduates getting a job for five years from August 2006 to February 2011, 65% of them was employed, 32% was not employed, and 3% continued further study, The 116 graduates employed were analyzed. The results revealed that 40% are full-time employees and 60% are part-time workers. For workplace types, 29% worked in general companies and 16% worked in public libraries. 10% worked in school libraries and college libraries. Those who worked in administrative divisions in colleges or schools comprised 9%. Those who worked in public organizations and publishing companies/bookstores were 6% each. 5% worked in specialized libraries. In the case of duties, 38% were librarians. 30% were engaged in office work. Those in sales/administration were 7%. Tellers/salesperson comprised 7%. 5% worked as teaching assistants and 3% worked in the web or in IT related businesses. Those who worked in private institutes and product planning/design comprised 2% each. Teacher librarians, day care center teachers, secretaries, company newsletter reporters, soldiers and self-employed workers were 1% for each. As a result, the major congruence was around 40%. For the career which the (56) unemployed desired, 57% prepared themselves for employment and 21% prepared for Civil Service Examination. Those who prepared for teacher recruit examination and who weren't confirmed were 11% for each. The problems identified were high unemployment to 32%, higher employment as part-time workers than full-time workers, and major congruence of just around 40%. As the results, the study proposes that the national and local authorities should actively create jobs, make the students majoring in LIS have the opportunity to understand and experience jobs related to information science, develop jobs related to LIS on the academic level and provide guidance to graduates.
National libraries have an obligation to meet the information needs of users by collecting as many various materials as possible. As legal deposit accounts for the highest percentage of the collection building methods of national libraries, they are trying to encourage the legal deposit of the publishers. However, the rate of legal deposit for the most publishers are pretty low. Therefore, in this study, the improvement plans of legal deposit system for the purpose of helping legal deposit of national libraries improve smoothly has been investigated by identifying the problems with the legal deposit system that publishers had and by suggesting the matters that should be improved based on the recognition of legal deposit by publishers. The plans for the revitalization of legal deposit for the publishers are as follows: promoting factors of legal deposit systems such as scope, deadline, compensation, fine and legal deposit libraries, simplification of legal deposit procedures, set-up of automated online system for legal deposit and strengthening of the method for promoting and educating the legal deposit.
The international standard for the school library suggests that school librarians qualified for librarian and teacher should run the school library. And library assistants should support the teacher librarian to carry out a role as a teacher. Despite the difference of requirements, librarians without teachers' license are under the human resources for school library administration. Furthermore, the job description between the school librarian and librarian is not well-defined in Korea. The different requirements in the library standards and the school library related laws have led to weaken professionalism and social status of librarianship. The condition that teacher librarians are not in the school library have brought the pressure to overcome imperfect functions of the school library and unfairness of educational services. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to strengthen teacher librarians' qualification system to improve their identity as educational subject specialist librarians. We ought to also build proper foundations of social recognition about librarianship through classifying the types of human resources in the school library into the teacher librarian, library paraprofessional and volunteers. Especially we should hold the job analysis based on administrator, teacher, service, leader, collaboration, and partner.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of the library tour program on pre-librarians' perception as librarians, and to present the educational meaning of library tour program for pre-librarians. For doing this, the 29 pre-librarians participated in library tour are surveyed before and after library tour program. The results revealed that the library tour program for pre-librarians is proved to have the educational effects that establish the per-librarians' attitudes toward positive librarian job performance. It's meaningful that this study presents the educational effects of library tour program to pre-librarians.
The present study tests the effects of library use on adolescents' civic competencies for democratic citizenship in a Korean context. Utilizing data (N=1,386) from the National Youth Policy Institute (2006), the study performed multiple regression analyses to test the association of library use of adolescents with the levels of civic competencies for democratic citizenship. Teenagers' library use had a positive significant association with cognitive civic competencies while showing a negative significant association with behavioral dimension of civic competencies. Based on the findings, the author discusses policy implications for developing library service for youth.
As school libraries increase quantitatively, the importance of volunteer activities in school library is highly emphasized. In that regard, this thesis approaches and discusses the concept of the school library and school library volunteers systematically through the literature review. Surveys and interviews were conducted to investigate and analyze school library volunteers. The survey was completed by school librarians and school library volunteers separately from the 12 elementary schools in the Seoul Dongjak District Office of Education. The current situation of school library volunteers has been analyzed through surveys and accompanied interviews and, based on the analysis, some suggestions were made to improve school library voluntary activities.
This study examined undergraduates' health information needs, information seeking behaviors, and their perceptions of credibility of health information in social media environments. Interviews with 22 undergraduates revealed that social media was used mainly in a preventive stage or in a health maintenance stage. The perceptions of credibility of health information widely differed according to the type of social media. This finding indicated the need for health information literacy education that could help undergraduates effectively evaluate and acquire health information online.
This study aims at analyzing librarians' job satisfaction at public libraries in Dae-gu, according to various management and employment styles. As a theoretical study, it discusses management styles of public libraries and argues concepts and factors of job satisfaction. Based on the discussion the study selects 7 factors of job satisfaction and conducts a survey. All the respondents are satisfactory to 4 factors; job, co-worker, superior officer, and business affairs, but are not satisfactory to 3 factors; wages, welfare, and employment. There are differences between contract managed libraries and direct managed libraries. At local government's contract managed libraries there is no difference in a sense of job insecurity between full-time and part-time librarians. The remarkable differences between full-time and part-time librarians are concerning participation in decision making processes and discretion in business affairs. The most significant differences between them are about wages, welfare and employment.
With explosive growth of information by recent advancements in information technology and the Internet, users need a method to acquire appropriate information. To solve this problem, an information retrieval and filtering system was developed as an important tool for users. Also, users and service providers are growing more and more interested in personalized information recommendation. This study designed and implemented personalized information recommendation system based on AR as a method to provide positive information service for information users as a method to provide positive information service. To achieve the goal, the proposed method overcomes the weaknesses of existing systems, by providing a personalized recommendation method for contents that works in a large-scaled data and user environment. This study based on the proposed method to extract rules from log files showing users' behavior provides an effective framework to extract Association Rule.
The purpose of this study is to study Bong Suk Park's thought and spirit in Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books for illumination and revaluation of Bong Suk Park's library philosophy that was a pioneer of Korean library. The study examined a compilation backgrounds, configurations and characteristics of Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books. A criticism of Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books, creation and change process of Korean Cataloging Rules were examined. Though Bong Suk Park was worked from 1945 to 1950 for five years for Korean Library, he made a lot of contributions to Korean library. Based on this, the study examined the Rules, his thoughts and spirit in Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books.
This is a study on types and current status of school library in japan that are open to public. it aims to increase library access and further improvement of accessible information environment by opening the libraries within schools. In case of Japan, libraries' importance to school education enacted world's first School library act by 1953 and installation rate of school libraries is achieved up to 100%. These libraries opened to its local community is in the process of increasing library usage and now in total of 11.6% of lower, middle, and upper school are already opened to their local community. Considering decreasing usage of facilities in schools, teacher vacant time, expanding libraries, and other various alternatives should be considered together. It will lead to equal access to information environment and lifelong education. The study suggests ways of installing school libraries in appropriate sizes and forms within their local societies. It also propose possible ways to open school libraries to perform their own functions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate if there is a relationship between reading to schoolchildren picture books on a library and its effects on their library use. 14 library-related picture books and 64 students in third grade of an elementary school in Suwon were selected for reading activities for 7 weeks to students with once a week program. The survey was conducted to those students to observe the changes in students' recognition on a library and a librarian before and after reading activities. As a result, it appears to be some improvements on reading attitude, understanding and awareness of function and using ways of school libraries, and the role of a school librarian. However, no changes have been made on the recognition of reading activities and a librarian. Based on these results, the study suggest that reading picture books to children could be continuous and highly effective methods to library education system.
This research analyzed the type of major research and support services provided by libraries in academic institutions. The research also investigated the awareness of users using the research and support services. We found that the awareness was influenced by users' major and status. In particular, prior usage of the services had statistically significant result depending on users' major and status. On the other hand, the rank of faculty members or the year of study for students were found to not have a significant influence on the general perception of the research support services. We also found that researchers require the support services in every stages of their study. In addition, the preference of training method and research guidance for such services differed by users' major.
Despite the growth in public concern about health information, the ratio of users who can search for accurate and reliable health information sources has been found to be quite low. Public libraries, as the best contact point to general users, must provide training programs for improving health literacy so that users will have the ability to search and analyze health information, judge the accuracy and reliability of resources, and make informed health-related decisions. This study developed a health information literacy education program suitable for Korean public library users. The effectiveness of the training was measured after administering the program, and necessary improvements were identified. As a result, this study found the education program had the following effects: improved public library users' familiarity with CHI-related terms, improved users' ability to find CHI-related information resources on the Internet, and significantly improved knowledge about health-related websites and information sources. In addition, users expressed interest in seminars on a variety of health information sources in the public library and asked that CHI-related education be included in the library's regular programming. However, this research represented the first time CHI-related education for public library users was performed in Korea, and therefore many limitations were present in the education instructor, the diversity of subjects, and the methodology. Development of more advanced CHI-related education programs for users is still required.
This article describes the whole process of Duksung Women's University Library's remodeling project. The library's remodeling project specified three concrete goals. Firstly, the remodeled library should be the center of the students' everyday life in campus. Secondly, the remodeled university library should be a place where students may experience culture. Thirdly, the remodeled university library should be a place where students enjoying spending as much time as they can. Eighty three percent of those using Duksung Women's University Library report satisfied with the newly remodeled library space and interior of the library building.
The purpose of the study is to design a space-based locality documentation model. It begins with analysing the changes of directions and strategies of locality documentation through literature surveys. Based on the analysis, a new paradigm of locality documentation is suggested in digital environment. It then suggests space-based documentation model, i.e., 'spanDoc Model (SPAace-based Networked Documentation Model)' which represent the new paradigm. The model focuses on planning the framework of use and accumulation of locality documentation.
As the cases of merging and cooperation of archives and libraries increase abroad, research and discussions about integration of complex information services among information centers, such as archives, libraries and museums started to emerge. In a similar vein, the need for integrated cultural information centers are suggested in Korea as the museums encounter the need for expansion of contents, and libraries try to diversify their functions, yet regional public archives has not been established. In this context, the concept of 'Larchiveum(libraries + archives + museums)' was proposed as an alternative that integrates and provides various information functions and resources, and research related to this started to emerge. At present, however, the Larchiveum has not been realized, the specific pathway to realize this kind of institution need to be discussed. This study analyzes the functional characteristics and elements of archives, libraries and museums, and based on these, the functional requirements of the larchiveum are drawn, and are reflected on the Larchiveum's functional planning for space planning in this study.
English is an important tool of information literacy in terms of global information sharing environment. This impacts readers advisory services of public libraries in many ways. In order to identify status of English reading programs in public libraries, this paper investigated 50 public librarries' services for non-English speakers in California, which has long history serving readers advisory services to them. As a result, it is suggested that public libraries have to play a key role to help adult users to be competent in English with English reading programs. Public libraries also need to support families to build English reading environment at home to expand reading activities in libraries. In addition, reading habit in mother tongue is also important for English reading ability, so public libraries consider to build a bridge between them to provide effective English reading programs.
