Abstract

Mapping FRSAD and other ontology models intends to suggest a higher knowledge level that is independent of any information implementation system or specific context, and to endeavor to focus on the semantics, knowledge structures, subject access, and interoperability. Providing an application of FRSAD model to information environment and representing and sharing the information within the library sector and beyond, there needs encoding scheme for knowledge representation. This study suggested an OWL based ontology architecture for FRSAD model and demonstrated the pilot FRSAD ontology model using Prot<TEX>$\acute{e}$</TEX>g<TEX>$\acute{e}$</TEX> software.

Abstract

This article reviews the literature dealing with e-journals published during the period from 2002 to 2011 in Korea. It aims to identify the research trends by examining the use and management of e-journals on theses, dissertations and academic journal articles in this field. This analytical review of the literatures could improve understanding the issues with regard to e-journals and provide the fundamental foundations on e-journal research. In addition, it could contribute to improve programs of e-journal services.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve the faceted navigation function of next-generation library catalogs(NGC) using the tables in a classification scheme. Because the tables provide forms or contents of materials systematically, faceted navigation based on the tables can be as effective as faceted navigation based on language, publishing date, or class-level subject facet. Therefore, class numbers based on the Korean Decimal Classification (KDC) were examined and the characteristics of schedules and tables were analyzed. As a result, suggestions to improve faceted navigation was provided. Moreover, the method using the tables does not need additional resources to derive facets because the facet analysis process is always carried out in the classification process.

Abstract

Using grounded theory, this study investigated users' information seeking behaviors associated with their perceptions of uncertainty. Based on a theoretical sampling, 17 doctoral students in the field of business management were recruited. Data was collected through the methods of questionnaire, interviewing, and think-aloud descriptions. The results identified user perceptions of uncertainty in the following stages: identification of information needs, selection of information systems, selection of search terms, actual use of systems, and evaluation of search results. In addition, positive aspects of uncertainties were presented. Major implications relate to information system and service improvements.

Abstract

With the rapid expansion of web information, conventional information retrieval techniques are becoming inadequate for users and often result in disappointment, because a couple of simple keywords can easily produce information too much. This study aims at the development of Web information retrieval techniques based on semantics to improve the quality of understanding for information. To achieve the goal, this study analyzes technologies and current status of researches on semantic information retrieval. With the results which are requirements, system architecture and indexing method, this study proposes the system architecture of semantic-based information retrieval system.

Abstract

This study focuses on two analysis: direct cognition of effectiveness of internship practicum, difference of career attitude maturity. The purpose of this experimental case study is to find out the practical problems of Internship education as a field-study of LIS by applying Job-Shadowing Internship methods. The results reveal that 71% of interns responded the positive effects of Job-Shadowing, but the effects to the career attitude maturity was not statistically significant. The implications of the case study are as follows; (1) systematic pre-instruction and orientation from the department are the critical factor of internship, (2) practicum guidelines(PEP), which is provided by the person in charge of tasks in internship institutions is the another important factor, and finally, (3) tools for measuring the effectiveness of internship is required for LIS practicum major course development.

Abstract

Recently scholarly information service institutes as well as public institutes have provided their holding resources to the other institutes and end users in order to reuse the information and create new value. Information providing subjects should stipulate the dissemination policy of digital contents for ensuring its consistent and efficient service. This study aims to establish the dissemination policy of digital contents for scholarly information service institutes focusing on NDSL. This study researches and analyzes the cases of the digital contents service policy and the dissemination policy to draw main components of the policy for NDSL. As a result, this study suggests goals and objectives, target users, coverage, dissemination methods, requests, agreement and MOU of utilization for the dissemination policy of NDSL.

Abstract

This study covers the basic information of the small libraries nationwide, holding materials, facilities/equipment, human resources, budget, usage/users, and service etc. The survey is divided into 4 steps to produce accurate statistical data and analyze it. As a result, total 3,349 small libraries meet the criteria of the Library Act in 2010. Their holding materials, facilities/equipment, human resources, budget, usage, service program are lack of providing the knowledge information and reading culture service, which is defined in the Library Act. In particular, the majority of small libraries(80%) are in poor condition to operate library facilities/equipment, budget, and their operation. This study proposes some suggestions to overcome the poor condition and to make small libraries prosperous in the near future.

Abstract

This study explored the concept of context-aware computing and its application to the library and information services. Context-aware computing represents mobile computing techniques which gather, analyze user's contextual information and provide appropriate information services for the specific user. The idea was proposed in the late 90's but it was not widely available to the public because of the technology limitation. Recent technology development made context-aware computing possible to apply to our everyday-life information seeking using smart phone and showed the usefulness of its application. This study introduced the concept of context-aware computing with some examples of it, and finally tried to propose some of its applications to the library and information services.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate on the effect of the elderly reading education activity for the children in local child care center. For this study, the data was collected, based on questionnaires by children who participated in the elderly reading assistant education activity program in 14 local child centers. And The study employs a survey observation of reading guidance lesson and individual interviews with the workers at the local child care center. As a result, this shows that the elderly reading guidance activity effects on draws children' interest in reading effectively, and that the workers' opinions about the elderly reading education activity are positive.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate asymmetric and nonlinear nature of the relationship between service attributes and global customer satisfaction, and to identify improvement strategies of service quality in libraries. In this study, two methods(such as kano's analysis and importance grid) were used to analyze the factor structure of customer satisfaction in libraries. The results show that two quality elements are classified as excitement factors, twelve quality elements are sorted as hybrid factor and eight quality elements are classified as dissatisfiers.

Abstract

The Reading Certification System is a form of reading education, a program in which homeroom teachers or librarians certify and reward students' reading and reading activities in order to raise motivation for reading. This study investigates and analyzes the management of the Reading Certification System in elementary school libraries in Gapyeong County, indicating problems and providing ways to resolve them by examining theories on school libraries' reading education and the Reading Certification System through a documentary survey and by conducting a survey of librarians and students on the categories of management, effectiveness, satisfaction levels, reading activities and reading motivation factors. An analysis of the survey results yielded the following suggestions for improvement: there should be a recommended books selection, a separate budget for a diverse reward system and more reading activities for students with low participation levels. I hope the results of this paper will be used as a reference when implementing the Reading Certification System in elementary schools, and that it will be an opportunity in changing perspective when applying the system.

Abstract

This study measures library anxiety using K-LAS for senior users, who constitute the smallest part of a public library users group. According to the findings, the overall score of library anxiety was 2.95, which was higher than the score of university students and local residents measured in previous studies. It was analyzed that the anxiety score of 'Digital Information' factor was the highest. In addition, it was found that the anxiety score was high in the old age group and the low education level group. Senior users whose intention of visit was to attend a community class and frequency of visit was lower showed higher library anxiety. This study suggests a method to reduce library anxiety of senior users, based on the analysis findings.

Abstract

The study aims at providing enhanced policies of school library opening services. It analyzed various issues on primary school libraries in Gangnam-gu, Seoul which have provided opening services for the last 10years, from 2001 to 2011, in cooperation with the Gang-Nam Gu Council. In theoretical aspect, this study discussed legal grounds, types, strengths and weaknesses of school library opening policies. Furthermore, it conducted a survey and interviewed the primary school librarians and users to explore their understanding about school library opening. As a result, it presented alternative strategies of three aspects; human resource, administrative system and finance for improving school library opening services.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to effectively provide professors in the design field with information services by identifying their information use behaviors. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires after dividing the specialties of 110 professors in the design field into 4 areas. The results were made in terms of purposes of use and the acquisition channels, types of information sources, difficulties of information acquisition and the library use of the institution. Some suggestions were shown as follows: collection of gray literatures such as exhibition data, seminar data, reports and pamphlets, purchase of web databases in design field, information literacy education including the use of domestic and foreign design databases for the professors and the construction of web directories on the library web sites.

Abstract

This study is for a small sized library to expand the functions of public libraries in the community. This study aims to encourage local residents utilizing information and public libraries by opening parted facilities to public and naming it a substitute. It is expected to contribute to richer welfare system. In detail, the study discusses progression of the small sized library as well as budgeting and hiring staffs in Committee on Library and Policy. However, there is limitations in terms of capabilities because school library is different from public library target users, space, unit plans. Therefore, this study investigates a small sized library as a function to find out type, plan, and space availability and size of ideal open school library.
