Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify possible needs for system improvements and reflect them on the operation and development of the system as a result of the usability assessment of an information site in science and technology. For this study, a variety of data collection techniques, including search logs, interviews, and think-alouds, were used. The search log data was processed to quantify four evaluation aspects, which were the effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction, and errors. The verbal data collected by think-alouds and post-interviews were used to identify possible needs of enhancement in a qualitative analysis. The comparison of the usability before and after the system enhancement revealed an increase of 15 points for effectiveness, 35 seconds decrease in efficiency, 5 points increase in satisfaction, and 1.1 errors decreased, implying an overall improvement of the usability of the current system.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research domains and trends of reading education in Korea and, suggest future research direction of this field. First, In order to identify the overview of research in terms of productivity, A basic analysis was performed based on 1,465 articles of domestic serials(1935~2011). Second, The analysis of intellectual structure using author profiling as a technique of text mining was performed based on 652 papers of domestic journals(2000~2011). Third, Depending on the results of these analysis, this study suggested the directions of future research of the field.

Abstract

Today's S. Korean society has become more multicultural, so many libraries in S. Korea have been working hard to serve their "new customers". In this regard, this study intends to investigate library cooperative systems for acquisition of multicutural materials in Western countries to relieve difficulties of libraries in S. Korea in acquiring multicutural materials. the study analyzed 23 national libraries, state libraries, public libraries and library systems in North America, Australia and Northern European Countries. The research found categorization schemes. First, library cooperative systems are divided into two groups according to cooperative methods: cooperative acquisition and bulk loan method. Second, the systems are categorized according to the territorial scope of the service: country, state or province, borough or city and inter-library. The study also analyzed and synthesized the characteristics of these systems. It finally provides recommendations to apply the methods used by the library cooperative systems in Western countries to Korean's situation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how LIS curriculum affects the undergraduate students' intention to information technology acceptance using Technology Acceptance Model(TAM). For this purpose, it was analyzed differences in factors of information technology acceptance (1) between LIS students and non-LIS students and (2) between LIS junior students and LIS senior students in heterogeneous information technology environments. The results are as follows; There is difference in IT acceptance factor(Subjective Norm variables) between LIS students and non-LIS students. There was no great difference in factors on information technology acceptance between LIS junior students and non-LIS students. LIS senior students show great difference in path coefficient with LIS junior students.

Abstract

This study aims to devise reasonable future-oriented librarian training program development plan for satisfying on-site demands of librarians nationwide by examining and finding out the operation of managing the nation's only one librarian training program of National Library of Korea. Based on a survey targeting 2,044 people participating in training program, meeting of interested persons, doing self-operation rating, it tries to find problems of training programs, examine ways to improve them and suggests solutions such as reforming of exclusively designed organization for educating, training of lectures, increasing training budget, promoting cyber training and balancing the testing systems. In addition, as part of improving librarian training programs, it considers Sejong National Library(currently being constructed) to be responsible for sharing its work and management.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide self-evaluation indicators that each school could judge on its basic conditions for the school library opening to local community. School library opening to local community is one of the significantly operational strategies to contribute to the development of the learning community. But the school library has insufficient resources and support system for their local services. According to the survey teacher librarians who have the experience for their school library opening to local community have considered of deploying teacher librarian as the most important factor. And they asserted emphatically that school library would secure personnel expenses and obtain facilities and resources to provide the stable and systematic service. Also among the school library's educational activities, reading education is considered the most suitable program for the community.

Abstract

To measure the state of instructional programs in school libraries revitalized by the MEST project, teacher-librarians who are members of a provincial library education research committee were asked to respond to a survey and phone interview. The results illustrate that both teacher-librarians and classroom teachers lack a comprehensive understanding of information literacy(IL), and that information literacy instruction(ILI) was implemented in less than half of the surveyed schools. Even in those schools where ILI was implemented, the curriculum was underdeveloped, frequently consisting of little more than basic library orientation programs. The lack of understanding regarding ILI by classroom teachers was specified as a major barrier.

Abstract

This paper analyses the trends in library and information science curriculum in North America, in order to address the characteristics of the subject modules in LIS education institutions in advanced countries. The research is based on the related literature review and the analysis of universities' webpages. The analysis includes a comparison between GSLI and SIS, the curriculum and subject operations of Library and Information science courses, the number and kinds of core and optional modules and subjects.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is for the investigation into the education program and the reading guidance activity program of the Elderly Reading Assistant Program, which is operated by GyeongGi-Do. It is surveyed by material cooperation with the person in charge of the program in the GyeongGi-Do and by questionnaire the elderly who had participated in the GyeongGi Reading Assistant Education Program in 2011. The questionnaires are gathered based on general background, the participation object of education, the satisfaction of program, the improvement of the program by the elderly who had participated in the 138 beginner and the 166 intermediate course. As a result, it showed that the participation goal of the Elderly Reading Assistant Program is individual cultural activity or self-realization meaning such as the pleasure of working and the volunteer work, and the satisfaction in the education program and the reading guidance activity is high. It also presents the improvements of the program like professional education, the extension of activity period and the active cooperation from regional children's center etc.

Abstract

With the changes in information production and transaction, the ratio of electronic resources in library collection is increasing. Statistical date on usage of electronic resources is an important indicator for library management and development of information service. This study analyzed current state of global standards of usage statistics, and definition and features on electronic resources. It also provides current states of usage statistics data on electronic resources applied by major vendors and publishers. Based on the results of the study, this study proposed the methods to apply statistical data on usage of electronic resources to library management and development of information service.

Abstract

Although many elementary school students love to read edutainment comics, they are not appropriately guided when they read those books. This study aimed to suggest the necessity of reading instruction for the edutainment comics. To achieve the purpose of this study, we examined the 8 chapters programs of reading instruction-for the 4th grade students-in 2 times. After carrying out the 1st program, we found out the problem related to the program and developed the trouble shooted the 2nd program. The purpose of this study is to show necessity of reading instruction on the edutainment comics in order to activate students' reading. This research shows that if teachers use edutainment comics appropriately to teach students with learning difficulties and reading difficulties, they might help the students by developing their learning abilities and enthusiasm for reading. This study suggests reading guidance program should be used to improve students' learning and reading activities as elementary school students can have more interests to specific topics through the edutainment comics.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to review characteristics and research areas of environmental studies; to compare and analyze environmental studies in research classifications and Korean societies from Korea Research Foundation(KRF) as well as decimal classification systems such as KDC, DDC, NDC and to suggest several modifications for environmental studies in KDC for the next edition. First of all, environmental philosophy, environmental sociology, environmental education, environmental toxicology, environmental architecture, and environmental geography are suggested to add to the main schedule in KDC and -0276 green technology(environmental technology) is suggested to add to Table 1. Standard subdivision. And new classification numbers for environmental law and environmental public administration are suggested in law and public administration.

Abstract

This study shows whether the 14-week picture story reading program offered to the multi-cultural women has effects on encouraging their confidence. As a result of the study, (1) this program helped them to have confidence in reading Korean books. (2) However, it did not help them raise confidence in themselves. (3) This story reading program offered a lot of factors to help them have confidence in living in Korea. (4) The women had dreams, but they did not have enough confidence and information to make their dreams come true. Based on these results, this study suggests that libraries should provide multi-cultural women with bibliotherapy programs, multi-cultural community groups and classes for multi-cultural house wives, and information literacy programs through picture story books to help make their lives in Korea easier.

Abstract

This study investigated librarians' perception and preference of cultural programs in the field of cooperation between school and public libraries. The findings are as follows: 1) Librarians and teacher librarians at school and public libraries perceive the importance of cultural programs in library service. 2) Online space was mostly preferred as a means of PR activities by librarians and teacher librarians at school and public libraries. 3) The preferred methods to cooperate projects between school libraries and public libraries were to implement programs through public librarians' field visiting, and to participate linkage program customized to individual school libraries. 4) Preferred types of cooperation were to sign MOU and to make a cooperative system between school libraries and public libraries.

Abstract

DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) is useful to measure the relative efficiency of organizational units where the presence of multiple inputs and outputs. This study applied DEA-CCR and DEA-BCC to evaluate the technical, pure technical, and scale efficiency of 29 university libraries. The input variables were number of books, print edition expenses, building space, staff, number of seats. As output variables we estimated: reader visits, number of borrowed items, number of visitors. It was found out that number of libraries with 100% relative efficiency among 29 libraries were 13. Also the results shows that main reason of inefficiency was from scale rather than from pure technical. Many inefficient libraries were operations of increasing return to scale.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to excavate the current critical issues and suggest the future direction of the Library and Information Sciences(LIS) education. To do so, this research conducted a thorough comparative study of LIS eduction in Korea, U.S.A., and Australia, and the extensive research of the iSchool(Information School) movement currently involving 33 universities all around the world started with the initiative in U.S.A. Specifically, the study investigated the changes and the essence of LIS education and research trends by reviewing and analyzing comparatively the prior domestic and overseas research. Then, it examined the current characteristics of the LIS curricula in Korea, U.S.A., and Australia and performed the inter-country analysis. Finally, the study concludes with suggestions of the future of the LIS education and research directions through an in-depth case research of the iSchool movement spreading out rapidly all over the world.

Abstract

The review journal is becoming important to select appropriate resources as the increase of publication of children's materials. The study aims to suggest the focal points and basic frameworks of review journals of children's materials to be used as select tools. The study employs case studies. Four foreign review journals and a Korean library journal are analyzed. The study found nine guidelines for basic framework to develop review journals of children's materials.

Abstract

This paper aims to propose the most appropriate method for calculating the journal PageRank in a domestic citation database. Korean journals show relatively high journal self-citation ratios and have many outgoing citations to external journals which are not included in the domestic citation database. Because the PageRank algorithm requires recursive calculation to converge, those two characteristics of domestic citation databases must be accounted for in order to measure the citation impact of Korean journals. Therefore, two PageRank calculation methods and four formulas for self-citation adjustment have been examined and tested for KSCD journals. The results of the correlation analysis and regression analysis show that the SCImago Journal Rank formula with the cr2 type self-citation adjustment method seems to be a more appropriate way to measure the relative impact of domestic journals in the Korean Science Citation Database.
