The expectation and the role for the university are rising due to the national competitiveness and change of environment in higher education in the knowledge based society, and the role to realize the effective lifelong study is also underlined in lifelong study society. And the social awareness is also diffused that the university should share the specialized substantial information resource with the community, and ensure the access right to knowledge and information to local inhabitant. Like this, the roll as an information center that the university can develop the local society as the component of the community according to the diffusion of lifelong study and the change of civic awareness. To check the open state of university libraries to community, this study surveyed and analyzed the open state of 4-year-course university libraries in Seoul and Gyoenggi region. On this base, this study emphasized that the university should open its libraries and positively offer the abundant specialized data of university libraries to the local residents. And this study suggested the way that the university libraries can cooperate connecting with the local public libraries and the school libraries as a positive service way of university libraries. Also this study accentuated that the university libraries should establish an open-door policy of its libraries and enlarge the service for the local residents by using the university conditions to maximum with the positive support of the university libraries of government and the university's bureaucracy.
The present paper is focused on Korea's inscribed heritages, digitization of the Tripitaka Koreana & miscellaneous buddhist scriptures, and public uses of the digital properties in order to describe the Digitization & Popularization of Printing Woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana and Miscellaneous Buddhist Scriptures, Memory of the World. The Goryeo Daejanggyeong or the Tripitaka Koreana and miscellaneous Buddhist sculptures refer to printing woodblocks of the Tripitaka(National Treasure No.32), and repositories (National Treasure No.52) where the woodblocks are stored. The woodblocks numbers 1,514 types/81,350 blocks/162,700 pages. Haein temple has worked the digital Tripitaka project 2009-2010 and The project for 2010 will focus on DB correction and modification, improvement of homepage that was made in 2009. For this, the focus was especially put on investigating current status and development plans of the digital Tripitaka project. In popularization of the digital Tripitaka, this study examined the Korea's utilization policy and current situation of knowledge resources about culture, successful cases of digital Tripitaka projects, and popularization strategies. This research can contribute to digitization of other cultural heritages and related researches in the future.
Due to the growth of people's use of the Internet as well as interests in health, people's needs of health information have rapidly increased in public libraries. Nevertheless, there are few studies in Korea about users' needs for health information and services that public libraries can offer to support these user groups. In the current study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted in order to understand the role of public libraries and librarians in serving users with health information and to identify the types of consumer health information(CHI) services available to users in public libraries. As for the CHI services that public libraries can offer for users, the current study emphasizes and discusses the directions and guidelines for improving the following six approaches: 1) CHI collection and information resource building, 2) CHI reference services, 3) CHI user education and training program development, 4) CHI services for minority/disability/cultural diversity groups of users, 5) CHI outreach program development, and 6) CHI network development with medical libraries, academic libraries, hospital, and medical institutions and associations. Although most of the discussion in the current study centers on cases and services provided in the United States or other countries, findings would be used to inform the importance of CHI services in public libraries, and to design and develop CHI services in Korea.
This study aims to analyzed the treatment factors in the reading activities in order to examine the possibility for such factors to applied to the actual life of the old, and sought for the utilization and direction of the reading program that is presented as the treatment and prevention of the emotional problems of the old people. Considering such circumstances, involving in reading activities improves the quality of the old people's life by meeting their internal desire by themselves and giving the meaning to their life with creativity. In addition, the reading activities helps the old people to express in-depth conflicts, emotion, desire and thinking that they are routinely experiencing, thus leading to the treatment of their agony, trauma, and pain. In such sense, it is very meaningful for the elderly to be joined in any reading activities.
The study aims at identifying catalogers' perception of competencies in cataloging. The study focuses on cataloging and classification knowledge, library systems, materials, metadata formats, authority control, foreign language, computer skills, and interdependence and personal skills. It discusses the gap between previous studies and catalogers' perceptions of competencies required for the job. It provides implications for cataloging education. It has values in that the study as an exploratory study urges continuous studies to identify how catalogers' perceptions are changed according to information environment. It will be a base to develop job descriptions for catalogers.
This research looks into the theory and practice of interconnections that exist between information literacy instruction(ILI) and writing instruction to gain further insights related to the development and forming of Korean ILI program. First of all, as evidenced by the ambiguity and various concepts that are possessed by the information literacy, this paper clearly indicates that the ILI cannot be achieved with a standardized set of guidelines across the board. And then, after investigating into the theories which deal mainly with the relativity to writing amongst the various ILI programs, this paper introduces precedents of Utah University, USA and Windsor University, Canada which have carried out writing instruction by actually connecting it with the ILI. Finally, this paper sounds out the possibility of connections or cooperation between writing and ILI within the scope of the Korean situation and suggests alternatives.
This study examined the performances of eight current e-book producers and suppliers in three areas(technology development, contents and services) using 16 evaluation criteria. Each criterion was measured using 6 scales on eight e-book producers and suppliers. The study results showed that overall, Kyobobook was the best performer, followed by Bookcube in the 2nd, Ridibooks the 3rd and Interpark the 4th. Specifically, Bookcube was the best in the field of 'technology development', Kyobobook was the best in the field of 'contents' and Kyobobook and Ridibooks worked equally best in the field of 'services'. Based on the results, some recommendations have been suggested for developing better e-book producers, effective interface design, enhancement of readability, variety of contents, development of multimedia materials and aggressive advertisement.
The purpose of this study was to analyze whether the promises of library field were, what the promises of candidates were, and whether the content of the promises showed the dissimilar tendency or discrepancy. The starting point of this study was that the library-related issues should be raised in the local election in order that library-related problems in the local area were considered as the policy. The standpoint of this research was based on the notion the library-related problems could be settled if the candidates have an interest in the library field. The range of this research was limited in the election conducted in June 2. 2010. Candidates' promises were collected through a questionnaire, categorized and analyzed by subject. According to the result of analysis, the most candidates had interest in establishing of library infrastructure, on the other hand they had no interest in collection development, library policy, allocation of budget, and job creation for librarian.
The purpose of this study is to introduce the concepts of smartphone and app, to review the theoretical researches and the representative service examples in academic libraries' mobile services based on smartphone apps, and to propose the proper mobile services methods based on smartphone apps in academic libraries of Korea. The ways for mobile app services in academic libraries are like these: 1) Libraries need to prepare the hybrid service system based on the combination of mobile web and app for smartphone. 2) Libraries have the guidelines for choosing apps which are applied to library services. 3) Libraries develop the apps for library marketing and education services and make use of existed apps to their own services. 4) Smartphone application bibliography service(Appography service) needs to be developed and serviced as an academic library service field.
In this era all successful organizations, whether profit or nonprofit, accept marketing concept as management philosophy and try to maximize consumer satisfaction in order to achieve their own goals. Libraries are no exception. A consumer decision process model is borrowed to explain how library service users act through five stages. Armed with information about library users, library management can be more user-oriented and bring higher user satisfaction. Some measures for effective library management are suggested.
This study tried to suggest a plan for an efficient management and utilization of job-related collections closely connected to the job education field of colleges. The data were collected through data inquiry, telephone interview inquiry and questionnaire and based on the results of the analysis, an efficient utilization plan of job-related collections was derived. It reached a result that it is desirable that libraries initiatively operate job-related collections but in consideration of the approachability, use convenience and utilization of students, the display and management of materials are performed jointly with libraries and employment departments. In addition, so as to plan the development of the job-related collections, libraries need to develop the common basic major materials by major to consider the characteristics as well as educational purposes of colleges and develop the core employment major data connected to major related certificates and intensively secure job practice focused materials.
National R&D project management agencies have promoted continuous investment and development to provide efficient information such as collection and analysis of industry and technology information and research trend information, and development of user oriented information system. This research analyzes Region Industry Total Information System status to manage regional R&D and suggests methods for regional industry project management. This paper may contribute to the advancement of efficient information management system though research method.
Although research has shown a significant amount of work identifying various dimensions of relevance along with exhaustive lists of relevance criteria, there seem to have been less effort to apply the findings to improve actual systems design. Based on this assumption, this paper investigates to what extent those relevance criteria have been incorporated into the interface features of major commercial Web search engines, suggesting what can/should be done more. Before stepping into the actual system features, this paper compares recent relevance research in Information Science with other human factor studies both in Information Science and its neighboring discipline (HCI), as an attempt to identify studies that are conceptually similar to the relevance research, but not named as such way. Similarities and differences between these studies are presented. Recommendations suggested to support applicable interface features include: 1) further personalization of interface designs; 2) author-supplied meta tags for the Web contents; and 3) extensions of beyond-topical representations based on link structure.
The purpose of the study is to construct a History Ontology Model for historical person to analyse issues of Korean History Thesaurus and interview history specialists who are use information systems in National Institute of Korean History. This study verifies the difference between both descriptions through comparative analysis of term concept in Korean History Thesaurus and mind-map written by history major. Based on this, we build history ontology model to meet users' information needs and adapt to information retrieval system. First, to organize unique features of history, we define class and attribute and then enlisted considerations for instance input. The study suggests a possibility of new service through combination multiple features using concept extension that is a strength of ontology.
The purpose of this study is to understand and analyze the satisfaction level of users regarding the search and search results of D College Library system implemented by Open API. For the study, 90 students of D College searched the library system with 4 subjects regarding on current affairs and assignments, and then evaluated the satisfaction on search functionality and contents usability. In results, they satisfied search expansion in general. Especially, the satisfaction levels for the convenience of search method and preview was the highest, but that of level for the arrangement and browsing of search results and the searching speed was the lowest. In terms of currentness, relevance, usefulness and utilizability aspects, Naver was the most highly evaluated, followed by library’s database, dissertation/academic journals, Youtube and Flikr. The cause of the unsatisfactory could be reduced when the library system implements the useful and attractive search interface.
This study aims at investigating ways to enhance the efficiency of knowledge management systems in research institutes. This study analyzes the current state of knowledge management systems, changes in users' perception, and the use of knowledge management systems in Daedeok Science Park, and suggests improvement measures. This study reviews previous studies and employs a survey for case studies. This study also conducts log data analysis of knowledge management systems to investigate the current state of system use. The questionnaire asks about the interest in knowledge management, evaluation and rewards of knowledge contribution, quality of knowledge, and the level of utility. This study tests hypothesis and analyzes the frequencies. This study finds that the interest and use of knowledge management system have been remarkably dropped, and also reveals that maintaining reward systems and diverse rewarding systems are required.
